Grouping rules by network
Different networks display their numbers differently. The formatter detects the network from the leading digits and applies the correct grouping:
- Visa, Mastercard, Discover, JCB, UnionPay (16 digits) — 4-4-4-4.
- American Express (15 digits) — 4-6-5.
- Diners Club (14 digits) — 4-6-4.
- Unknown networks — a generic 4-4-4-4 grouping.
Formatted vs raw
The formatted output adds clean single spaces for reading and pasting into a display. The raw output is digits only — what you should store and send to a payment processor. Card numbers should never be stored with spaces.
Building a card input?
These are the same grouping rules you’d apply in a checkout field mask. Detect the network from the first digits, group accordingly, and always submit the raw digits. To also check validity, pair this with the Card Validator.
