How prefixes map to networks
Every card number begins with digits that identify its network. Payment systems read these first — the network, then the issuing bank — to route a transaction. A single leading digit is often enough: 4 is always Visa. Other networks need a few more digits to be certain.
Supported networks & prefix ranges
The table below is generated from the same data the detector uses, so it always matches the tool. Ranges are inclusive and reflect publicly documented conventions.
| Network | Prefix ranges | Lengths |
|---|---|---|
| Visa | 4 | 13, 16, 19 |
| Mastercard | 51–55, 2221–2720 | 16 |
| American Express | 34, 37 | 15 |
| Discover | 6011, 65, 644–649, 622126–622925 | 16, 19 |
| JCB | 3528–3589 | 16, 17, 18, 19 |
| Diners Club | 300–305, 36, 38, 39 | 14, 16, 19 |
| UnionPay | 62 | 16, 17, 18, 19 |
| RuPay | 60, 65, 81, 82, 508, 353, 356 | 16 |
| Maestro | 50, 56–59, 63, 67 | 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 |
Handling overlaps
Some ranges are shared. For example 65 is used by both Discover and RuPay, so a two-digit prefix of 65 is ambiguous — but 6011 resolves cleanly to Discover because it is a more specific match. The detector always prefers the longest, most specific matching prefix.
Prefix vs full BIN
This tool needs only the leading digits to name the network. To also learn the issuing bank, card type and country, enter 6-8 digits in the BIN Checker.
